FGS Conference to be held in Philadelphia

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) will be holding their annual conference Footprints of Family History in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 3-6 September 2008.

The conference will be held downtown at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and there are several places close to the conference for research: The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, NARA-Mid-Atlantic Region, Free Library of Philadelphia, and Philadelphia City Archives.

Two Colorado genealogists will be presenting lectures:

    Saturday, 6 September, 9:30 a.m., “Survey First, Settle Later: A Discussion of the Public Lands Survey”
    Saturday, 6 September, 2 p.m., “Homestead Records: A Day in the Life of Your Ancestors”
  • Julie Miller, CG
    Friday, 5 September, 11 a.m., “Carriers of News and Knowledge: Post Office Records”
    Saturday, 6 September, 8 a.m., “Google’s Not the Only Game in Town”
    Saturday, 6 September, 11 a.m., “Beyond Population Schedules”

FGS announced this week a “Bring the Whole Gang” member society discount. The discount will be given to
societies that bring at least five members to the conference. Details are at Conference Rebate.

Update on Revolutionary War workshop

As we reported a few days ago in Special Revolutionary War workshop, registration for that workshop was limited to 25 people. The limit was quickly reached, but Joan Peters has generously agreed to repeat the workshop on June 19th, also limited to 25 people. For more information and sign-up details, see the earlier post.

Special Revolutionary War workshop

A free workshop on “Men of America’s Forgotten War: The Revolutionary War Veteran” will be presented by Washington genealogist Joan Peters on Wednesday, 18 June 2008. The sessions will be held from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm in the fifth floor Gates Conference Room at Denver Public Library (Central Library, 10 West 14th Avenue).

Joan W. Peters is a Certified Genealogist and author of numerous books on Virginia genealogical records and Revolutionary War research. Her topics will include:

  • Creating a Profile and Drawing a Portrait
  • Using a Diverse Record Base

Registration will be limited to 25, and advance sign-up is required. To reserve your place, call Western History/Genealogy at (720) 865-1821, or sign up at the WH/G Reference Desk.

There will be a lunch break from approximately noon-1 pm. The Library opens on Wednesdays at 10 am.

Baerbel Johnson to speak at CO -PAL -AM Spring Seminar

Colorado Chapter, Palatines to America (CO-PAL-AM) is having their Spring All-Day Seminar on Saturday, 26 April 2008. The event will feature key speaker, Baerbel Johnson. Baerbel was born in Germany and is a professional genealogists. She works at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City as an International Reference Consultant and holds degrees in Family and Local History and Sociology from BYU.

Morning Schedule:

    8:30 - Registration

    9:00-10:20 - “What I’ve Always Wanted to Know About German Research, but . . .” a discussion moderated by Bill Nix.

    9:00-10:20 - “Basic German Genealogical Research” presented by Ann Lisa Pearson.

    10:30-11:40 - “Strategies For Solving German Research problems” presented by Baerbel Johnson.

Buffet Luncheon

Afternoon Schedule:

    1:00-2:20 - “German Research on the Internet” presented by Baerbel Johnson.

    2:40-4:00 - “Avoiding Mistakes in German Research” present by Baerbel Johnson.

The seminar is will held at the Holiday Inn - Lakewood, 7390 W. Hampden (S. E. Corner of Wadsworth and W. Hampden). Cost for the seminar is $35 members, $45 non-members. Pre-registration is necessary.
