The Special Collections Staff at Penrose Library, Colorado Springs celebrated the 500,000th index entry into the Pikes Peak NewsFinder at a reception on Monday, 8 December 2008. Special Collections volunteer, Melba Mayall, had the honor of entering the index record marking the milestone.
Pikes Peak NewsFinder is one of the largest, free to access, newspaper indexes available on the Internet and has half-a-million citations to local news articles and obituaries for newspapers of the Pikes Peak Region, some dating back to the 1870s.
Indexing the Colorado Springs Gazette is an ongoing project of Special Collections in the 1905 Carnegie Library. Dozens of Pikes Peak Library District staff, members of the Pikes Peak Genealogical Society and other dedicated volunteers have contributed to this online resource over the years.
Newspapers indexed in Pikes Peak NewsFinder include the: Colorado City Iris, Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph, Colorado Springs Gazette, Colorado Springs Sun, Fountain Valley News, Free Press, El Paso County Democrat, Out West, and Security Advertiser. Many of the citations link directly to the full-text of the article. Those not currently linked can be ordered, free of charge, directly from the index.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) presented three awards to deserving Colorado genealogists at the recent FGS annual conference on 5 September 2008 in Philadelphia.
Clara Duer, Melba Mayall, and Ruth Christian are all members of Pikes Peak Genealogical Society and were nominated for the awards by that Society.

Clara Duer-Distinguished Service Award
Clara was selected for the Distinguished Service Award for her significant volunteer efforts in extracting and indexing records held in Special Collections at the Pikes Peak Library District, Colorado Springs. Her distinguished service in evidenced by the over 17,000 volunteer hours that she did to complete projects that benefit the genealogical community as a whole. Her projects for the nearly 30 years of volunteer service included extraction and indexing of obituaries for a 100 year time period from local newspapers, the marriage transcriptions from the El Paso County court house, walking cemeteries and preparation of the manuscript, and her work beyond the Pikes Peak region as the sole researcher and extractor for articles from the Pittsburgh Gazette from 1786 to 1820.
Melba Mayall-Archives Award
Melba Mayall received the Archives Award for her continued support of the genealogical community and especially to the Special Collections of the Pikes Peak Library District. She has volunteered 5,700 hours over the last 25 years on projects for the library. She has worked on indexing collections, the preservation project of retyping all members’ manuscripts of the Colorado Springs Ghost Town Club and Historical Society, and 3,600 hours organizing and indexing the historical photograph files of prominent photographers of the Pikes Peak Region. Melba is a tireless volunteer who believes in preservation of history for the future.
Ruth Christian-Directors Award
Ruth Christian was awarded the Directors Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the field of genealogy and family history, and for her extra-mile efforts to promote good will and improve services. Ruth has given many hours of volunteer work in the Family History Centers in Colorado Springs, and has offered guidance to individuals, organizations, and genealogical societies. She serves not only at the local and state level, but also in national genealogical organizations. Ruth’s offers of help to individuals exemplifies her exceptional contributions. She has volunteered hundreds of hours of individual assistance and instruction for the DAR, and in her research workshops she shares her knowledge and promotes good will. As a leader in the genealogical community, Ruth’s long reaching commitments include the Pikes Peak Genealogical Society, as well as Colorado state organizations including the Colorado Council of Genealogists, Colorado Chapter of the Palatines to America, Colorado Association of Professional Genealogists. Nationally, she is a member of the FGS ByLaws Committee. Ruth’s activities promotes genealogy, and offer a strong commitment in all spectrums of the genealogical world.
