September genealogy column

Julie Miller’s monthly column is in the 16 September 2006 edition of the Broomfield Enterprise. The topic for September is “Family history of Broomfield’s first postmistress,” a woman who was officially appointed to that office on 26 September 1884. The article tells about the life of Druella Coulson, as well as her family, and cites numerous original and derivative sources.

September-October 2006 Events

Here are some important events coming up in the next two months:

11 & 12 September– The Computer Interest Group of the Colorado Genealogical Society (CIG), Beau Sharbough seminar.

7 October– The Black Genealogy Search Group (BGSG) will present the 5th Annual Heritage Festival “Solving the Mysteries of the Past: Genealogy Searches & Researches.”

21 October– Arvada Family History Center will present the Arvada Family History Fair.

5th Annual Heritage Festival

The Black Genealogy Search Group (BGSG) will present the 5th Annual Heritage Festival “Solving the Mysteries of the Past: Genealogy Searches & Researches” on Saturday, 7 October 2006.

Scheduled events are:

10:00-11:30 a.m. – Robert Greer, Mystery Author. Will describe the relationship of writing a mystery novel and solving the mysteries of family research. Available for book signing.

11:15-11:45 a.m. and 3:00-3:45 p.m. – Mysteries of the Federal Census.

1:00-2:00 p.m. – Marie Taylor, Family History Library, will present “Researching your African American Roots in the 19th Century.”

Displays by the National Archives, Colorado Genealogical Society, CGS/Computer Interest Group (CIG), and BGSG. BGSG members will display their family research and DNA results.

Arvada Family History Fair

The Arvada Family History Center is hosting a Family History Fair on Saturday, 21 October 2006. The day will begin at 8:10 AM with keynote speaker, Steve Rockwood, Manager of the Family History Library (FHL). He will speak about the changes that will take place on FamilySearch and the FHL latest acquisitions.

There are 20 classes planned featuring information on how to use the World Catalog, Preserving Records & Photo, Scandinavian Research, Catholic Records Research, Why doing Genealogy may help save your life, understanding Genograms and more. See the schedule for a complete list.

The day will include “Ask an Expert.” Teachers will be available during the fair for help with specific genealogical questions in their field of research.

For the novice: Download a pedigree/family group sheet online and fill it out and bring it with you. Staff will be on hand, to show you how to locate ancestors utilizing the many genealogical sites online and how to download a free genealogical program.

Lunch is available (order online) or you can bring your own.
