Colorado’s Historic Newspaper Collection adds to collection
Colorado’s Historic Newspaper Collection (CHNC) added two newspapers to their collection in June. The Glenwood Post and Weekly Ledger and the Glenwood Post joined the growing collection along with additional issues of the Fort Collins Courier and the New Castle Nonpareil. CHNC is a collection of historic newspapers that have been digitized and made available for free on the Internet. The collection currently includes 93 newspapers published in Colorado from 1859 to 1923. The newspapers, which were published in English, German, Spanish, and Swedish, are from 36 counties and 50 cities throughout the state.
CHNC has made the full-text of each newspaper searchable by using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. Browsing individual issues is also an option.
The CHNC website includes a sortable list of newspaper titles, guide for using CHNC, tips on searching historical newspapers, genealogy help, and a “My Collection” section. The “My Collection” section allows individual articles to be saved.
CHNC is a joint project of the Colorado State Library, Colorado Historical Society, and the Collaborative Digitization Program. There are over 200 Colorado newspapers available through 1923 and the goal of CHNC is to digitize them all.
Thanks to Kathy Hinckley, CG for the tip on CHNC.
