Terence T. “Terry” Quirke, Jr., Ph.D. was the recipient of the 2006 Award for Excellence: Genealogy and Family History Book, presented by the National Genealogical Society at the NGS Annual Banquet on 9 June 2006. The award is given for a specific, significant single contribution in the form of a family genealogy or family history book which serves to foster scholarship and/or otherwise advances or promotes excellence in genealogy.

Dr. Quirke’s book, Quirke Genealogy and Family History of Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland; India, New Zealand, England, Australia, South Africa, and the United States, begins in 1787 with Michael Quirke of County Tipperary, Ireland. The preface of the book states:

“This genealogy and family history exemplifies the Irish diaspora of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. From an Irish foot soldier in a British regiment of the early 1800s he, his children, and their descendants became significant persons living in almost all the major English-speaking countries and the British Empire: Ireland, India, New Zealand, England, Australia, South Africa, as well as the United States. Although none lived in Canada more than fifteen years, significant contributions to the geology of that country were made.”

Dr. Quirke is a Fellow of the Irish Genealogical Research Society, a member of the board of directors of the International Society for British Genealogy and Family History, a member of the Colorado Genealogical Society and WISE Family History Society.

Congratulations Terry!
