After years of complaints from genealogists and consumers, Colorado has filed suit against Morphcorp, LLC. On 23 November 2005, Attorney General John Suthers issued an announcement giving details about the lawsuit and linking to a complaint form which dissatisfied customers can fill out and send in.

According to the Colorado Secretary of State, Morphcorp was incorporated on 16 March 1994 (see copy of organization papers). Take a look at the Recent File Uploads for November at the Colorado GenWeb site. Highlights include (all partial): burials at Fairmount Cemetery, Denver; some marriages from Kit Carson County (including witnesses!); tombstones in Silver Cliff, Custer County.

The Colorado State Archives has added a new set of records to their Colorado Historical Records Index. There are now over 47,000 entries from “Denver Death Index 1870-1905.” There is only one entry from 1870, and no more than four entries for any year until 1886. But by 1889 there are two or three thousand entries each year. The highest number of deaths - 3397 - was reported in 1904.

Although the city of Denver was part of Arapahoe County until 1901, you need to enter “Denver” into the County field when you fill out the form:

According to the Archives’ description of these records, the original records have additional information which commonly “includes name of person, date of death, age, sex, address, marital status, occupation, nativity, doctor or coroner, place of internment, undertaker, and cause of death.” To purchase copies of the records, you need to visit the Archives in person, or correspond with them; see their Web site for contact information.
